So
GB talks has soundbite opportunity with elderly (careful or I’ll have to call myself elderly) woman
Woman expresses views about Eastern European immigrants typical of her generation.
GB retreats to car and is unhappy about discussion
Aide presses and GB says she’s a bigot. I tend to agree, mildly but entrenched negative views? Yup.

So far no problem. Old fashioned views are deeply embedded and you have to pick your battles. I see no problem in letting rip in private (I’ve been a teacher. What do you think we do in the staff room? And then we go out and we’re nice to them all over again.) and being polite in public.
Splashed over the news

And then he goes to apologise!
What for?

Apparently for suggesting she was a bigot. The hurt to her was caused by the media spreading off the cuff remarks. If they were so solicitous of her feelings why do it?

I want my politicians to privately think badly of some while staying courteous, not to swing on a sixpence and backtrack.

It’s all irrelevant and the furious back pedalling leaves a worse impression than the original slip.

Looking back I once chose Boris Johnson and John Prescott as examples; both of them believe what they say and put their foot in it from time to time. I’d sooner have that than insincere polish.
