That was loud
Sep. 20th, 2009 11:29 pmToday we went cycling to a local stately home and garden. The route passes across the local airport flight path - runway lights in the fields, warnings about aircraft noise - and we noticed lots of cars parked on the verge on the way. There were tiger moths flying and it looked as though there was some sort of air show on.
While we were in the garden, a couple of miles away, there was aircraft noise but we couldn't see what was causing it. Some of the noise was a real whine, not anything we could identify, despite best beloved being keen on aircraft.
On the way back we were just by the runway when we say a Vampire and a Meteor (cold war jets)so we stopped to watch. They were stunning. Then there was a B17, Sally B, that I've seen in the Imperial War museum but never flying, doing stately passes overhead.
We thought it had finished (it was six o'clock) and moved on, but just as we got to the centre line of the approach lights the Red Arrows took off! Nine of them, taking off in a 3 by 3 formation, just clearing the road and with full throttle to climb fast. Comparing notes they may have been about 60 ft above us.
The show they put on was spectacular, but that start, with three planes over us, then turning to see three more apparently bearing down on us before they pulled up, and then three more, was unforgettable.
Part of me had been a little sad that we didn't know of the show and arrange to go (It turned out to employees and ex employees and families - and also very crowded.), but I think we got the best view we could have even if we got home two hours later than we planned to.
Have an engine icon.
