On a whim I used one of my second word to start
I assumed that 1 & 2 were in 3 & 4, and only one of those patterns is valid. Four possibilities and the NYT is a bit prim. Use one of the two that will confirm/reject the second letter (the less common but no naughty implications) and lucked out.
I forget that it could be 1 & 2 swapped, but one of the rejected letters removes that possibility.
